With the wing tip basically done, I started making the aileron and flap. The leading edge of the flap (shown) is 1/4" x 1" balsa which is glued right to the edges of each rib.

After much thought, I have decided to NOT use the spruce wood supplied in the kit. I will roll the dice with the aluminum K&S tubing which will be strengthened. I cut the above .064" thick aluminum bracket which will strengthen the tubing. This will be pinned and imbedded in the K&S tubing with JB weld.

I started by first determining where the strut attachment point was on the wing. Measuring (from the plans), I drilled the plywood strut bracket to hold two 10-24 blind nuts. This was done on both wing halves.

Test fit before I mix up a large portion of the JB Weld. One thing to note, before forcing the JB Weld into each tube, I cut two balsa plugs that fit inside each tube. They were pushed into each tube with the bracket for that tube. The purpose of the balsa plug is to capture the JB Weld and prevent it from moving down in the tube. The viscosity of the JB Weld is so thick, I don't think it will move, but it's good insurance.

At this point, the strut has been disassembled, and the JB has been applied. I thought it wise that the strut should be bolted into position until the JB cures.

These two brackets are for the top of the 5/8" K&S streamlined tube. They will attach the strut to the wing. I may not have mentioned it before, but each strut has one 3/4" and one 5/8" tube that makes one strut. Note the two holes in the leg of the bracket, these will help secure it in the streamline tubing once the JB Weld is applied. These legs insert into the tubing about 6 inches for plenty of support.

Bought this 3-in1 metal worker from Micro-Mark few years ago. It works great at shearing and making custom bends, it has gotten a workout on this project. While this tool isn't necessary to do this kind of work, it sure makes it a lot easier...

I cut eleven 1/2" pieces using this old miter saw box that I haven't used in a hundred years. It worked great! Note the pencil line inside the miter box indicating 1/2" mark.

Overnight the JB Weld had cured rock hard so I could now drill holes that will pin the strut to the inside spline/bracket. You can see how far each spline was inserted into the tubing for strength.
