I've indexed off the plans the angle that I will have to cut each tip. I'm being careful with my measurements as I only have one try at this to get it right.

These are the tips for both the stabilizer and elevators. Solid 3/4" balsa. I've drawn a line that goes around the perimeter of each tip denoting the center.

With the tips glued onto the stab only, I can now proceed with the hinging process. I need to find the exact center of the stabs trailing edge. Keep in mind that because of the tapered ribs on the stab the measurement from one end to the other will be different. I want to index my ruler on the exact end of the TE. To be sure that it's on the end I am holding my metal square as a backer for me to butt my ruler up to.

Now I've taken blue painter's tape and placed about a one inch piece directly above the hinge point line. I've extended that line onto the top of the tape using a fine tipped Sharpie.

This is a jig that Robarts sells and if you want to install your hinge points straight and true it's a must have. The threaded top knob is removable for different size hinge points. I've installed the correct size for 1/8" hinge points. You want to have a new or sharp 1/8" drill bit, which I've equipped with a depth stop that you can find in your local hardware store.

With all the hinge point locations marked on the stab's TE, I use the scribe tool that is screwed into your square and make an indentation in the center. If you don't have or lost the scribe tool an awl works just as well.

Place the jig over the TE of the stab and using an awl I find the indentation that I previously made to ensure the hole that I will drill is in the correct location. You could look through the top hole and just site the indentation if you prefer. Stay tuned for Part III...

Look closely at the hinge point. Note that the barbed portion of the hinge point is straight, another words its diameter is the same from the top barb to the bottom barb. Above the top barb the hinge point starts to taper. We need to account for that for a proper fit. I use a tapered stone chucked in my Dremel tool.
