The steel block is used to support the ring square and true to the file. Some I just happened to have on hand. A one inch or better hardwood board with a hole just a bit larger than the file would work fine too. Smooth easy strokes with light to medium squeeze are best. Check gap after every stroke or two remember you are cutting both ends at once.
